Social Networking Does It Work?

Social Networking has been in existence for around a decade. It took somewhat of a hit during the fall of the Dot Com's and was basically forgotten about until the last few years. My opinion is somewhat limited to what I have read but I will begin testing in the near future. Some of the documentation says it can bring more traffic than the largest search engine that begins with a 'G'. Traffic is the key to any commercial venture and the search engines have become very commercial in their evaluations by spiders using algorithms. Social networking follows a little different approach basically if your friends and my friends are friends; then probably we can become friends.

This idea can create a very good viral condition and bring almost immediate traffic to websites using this philosophy. It appears to work using Blogs, RSS, and even your web pages; if you create a social type tag to some of the social networks that exist and then ping the sites on a regular basis. I was pretty successful using blogs in the past so it sounds feasible that social networking could work.

Everything sounds good, but there is a lot of hype on the Internet; some are calling it "Web2" the new Internet.  Web1 being first Directories, and now Search Engines. The vast amount of information on the Internet makes it almost impossible to have humans compile it.

Social networking uses communities and allows the individual to sort through and evaluate the information and place tags (similar to keywords) on the individual pieces of information. They feel this eliminates some of the problems the search engines have by having people make the decisions about placement. Does it work? I can't honestly say at the present time, although I can't see that it would hurt anything.

If social networking follows along the lines of civilization then it could develop into a social network and take on some of the good and bad points. It sounds like a good idea and maybe its time has come.

Social networking is the buzzword of today, and millions of people and marketers can't be completely wrong. Social networking has outgrown most search engines for new members and some have taken notice and jumped on the bandwagon. There are hundreds of social networks in the beginning stages and you can be sure that some will fail. The remainder may offer the best possible mechanism for reaching targeted traffic and more sales.

I suspect that somewhere in the future they will find a way to capitalize and begin turning a profit from their efforts. As soon as enough marketers begin making money and find new ways to use the social networking sites to get more traffic and sales. Once they have created a large enough and profitable enough site they will probably follow the same or similar patterns as the search engines do today.
